Kurt Vonnegut said that you, after you know ranking the stories, proceed next to the hallucination that you are a minor but useful editor on a good literary magazine not connected with the university. Praise or damn as you please but do so rather flatly pragmatically with cunning attention to annoying or gratifying details be yourself, be unique, be a good editor. If I'm reading two authors at the same time it doesn't matter if they have nothing to do with each other I put them in conversation with each other.
