Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. It's transmitted to humans through tick bites, and the symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and this very characteristic, bullseye-shaped rash. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with antibiotics within a few weeks. Occasionally, patients can experience lingering Lyme symptoms post-treatment. Some experts believe that Lyme can sometimes trigger an autoimmune response that causes long-lasting symptoms.
