The Origins of Villain

When villain first appeared in English via Old French during the early 1300s, it had nothing to do with bad guys at all. The original English definition of the word villain was low-born, uncivilized, or rustic. To understand how the word for farm worker became the word for bad guy, we have to turn to an unlikely source: Ancient Rome.
