The Oligarchs and the Near East
Oligarchs spent the next five centuries trying to fight against anyone who would try to cancel the debts and redistribute the land. The typical oligarchic political response was violence and political assassination. So I find the common theme that made Western civilization different from everything that went before was the fact that they didn't cancel the debts.
