If it's seven miles away and this murderer's driving high speeds, it's going to take him less than seven minutes to get there. We don't know if they went somewhere else. This could have been an impulsive act. He sees two girls walking alone. Grabs one of them drives off with the intention of going to a specific location. But as you said, she starts to fight him off. He starts to lose control of the situation and says, Oh, I got to stop the car right here. It definitely seems like a possible misstep in this investigation.
