Roman law eventually got changed and this happened in the middle ages too but it's much more significant in Rome though Roman law got changed so that the wife the widow could get the estate. Of course what would she do with the estate she would move in her merchant boyfriend or she would let a bunch of the rabble who wandered the streets of the city tearing shit up they would let them come sleep there. This became the hostile system so it was like I like I like in I liken it to like Oprah's book club right where they have tea and crumpets and a bunch of rabble from the street and a bunch of their other rich widows or their old spinster
