Shotoku - The Tohu Colt

The tohu colt did start to wane in importance relative to other buddhist practices during the edo period. Shotoku veneration became a sort of cross sectarian unifier across all forms of japanese buddhism. Pretty much every sect, from the esoteric tendi and shindon temples associated with the aristocracy down to the true pierland buddhists of shinron showed at least some respect for the prince.
