Even Lincoln was flawed, but you have to recognize the struggle for equal rights as a kind of incremental, inch by inch struggle. Frederick Douglass called Lincoln the least racist white person I've ever met. So again, you cannot impose today's values in the past. What Lincoln did achieve was the unification of a country that seemed destined to tear itself apart. In doing so, he took on some of the worst excesses of racial prejudice, economic greed, and social conservatism.
