I'm a Cigarette Holder, or a Pipe Iman?

I always saw mentions of cigarettes and novels almost as a way to break up dialogue. Now that carries too many connotations, but it still can work asa a way of characterizing someone. It's just going to carry a very different constitution then. How about tattoos? Is that something that you see more in contemporary fiction? I i've never really paid that much attention to tattoos, but that is in part my own, my own personal bias. And we maybe don't have as strong a sense of, well, what brand dis does what mean?
