Descartes' spirit has continued to live in many geneticists who see selection as an ordering principle imposed upon a stupid sort of material substance, which can vary only randomly by chance. That is literally the definition of spirit, is that there is this far off land, away from, away from my body. Where's your diet? No, it's nothing to do with my body. It's out there, it's out there. I can't see it, can't find it, rationalize its spirits, coming in and splitting things, but it's over there somewhere.
