There's a parasite called toxoplasmosis, which if you become infected with it during pregnancy can result in birth defects. Cats are like a common vector of this parasite. It is very uncommon to get it from a cat because most people's cats do not live outside. Many pregnant women have told me they wish that I hadn't said anything about cleaning the litter box.
