How Did You Come Up With a Good API Design?

I think I had never thought about any sort of API design before that project. So it was really very much a learning process trying to understand how you should design an interface, like what actually makes a good interface. It was not what I expected to be doing as an intern project. That was way more freedom than I expected. And we ended up doing something pretty different from the original direction I was imagining we'd go.
