Is this a distinctively British narrative or does it apply to, for example, the US as well? The US is very different because you have in the south, not just slavery and some people getting rich from slavery. There's nobody who can actually look after machines that could be profitable to operate. Adding a bit of slave wealth does nothing. And if anything, it might even be negative because you end up jacking up wages.
