If you have enough people and enough variables, something will pop out. The problem is by using the statistical tools psychologists use, if I measure a hundred things, but then report on three variables where I found something without informing the reader or the paper reviewers that I tested a hundred things to find three statistically significant hits, I've actually probably not found anything. And for a long time, even though this is not a particularly sophisticated statistical point, psychologists and surely other social scientists didn't realize how serious an issue it was.
