There was of course a long lead up to this war. But it all took a giant lurch towards violence when in late February President Putin recognised the breakaway regions of Ukraine, Luhansk and Donetsk as independent. We're talking about coherence here. It's a sense of identity, conviction to fight and do what it takes to maintain their independence. Something of the David and Goliath about this battle, it has been fascinating and disturbing all at once.
