The New Yorker publishes stories that long on a regular basis anymore. I was like 5000 words or something. The culture is different now. There is a little more concern around word lengths and expenses and financial correctness. But the magazine still reads beautifully it looks fantastic. It would have been like writing for the New Yorker in the 1960s during its fastest years, he says.
