In the roughly 16th century in Europe people started to think about race in terms of heritability. Before that people mostly thought that traits like skin color, hair texture and so on had a lot to do with your environment. So this becomes a very interesting point. Anybody who studied the history of humanity would recognize that colonialism and slavery have been sort of human constants until quite recently.
