What Is the Application Layer?

A protocol is a language that allows two computers to communicate with one another. In the case of http, it's for web browsers and web servers but there's all kinds of other protocols. So email has SMTP, POP3 IMAP; Web browsers have HTTP, HTTPS. But then we also have, let's say, a protocol for Skype or NewTelef if you ever use those file sharing programs.
