CHAPTER

The Dead Are Not Reading Our Minds

Rossley remembered reading a novel in which a character seeks advice from an old woman on how best to poison her husband. The most effective poison, which would go absolutely undetected, she has told, is a pair of sweet and juicy. Rossley considered writing these questions down in her notebook, but they would make it sound as though she were having an argument with Marcy or the stranger who had died that morning. Never argue was Rossley's model, especially never argue with the dead.
