One study in rural China and India found that workers who received their payments in four sealed envelopes saved more than those who received their pay in a single bundle. It's also important to note that those with partitions took longer to bet in all scenarios, which suggests their cognitive processing was in action instead of the quicker automatic subconscious. Increased attention reduced their spending and their likelihood to take a risk and gamble more.
