The History of District Energy in the Former Communist Countries
District energy is also known as sort of a socialist technology, which I would just quickly say that it's not necessarily the case. But for historical reasons, this technology has been deployed quite widely in former communist countries. Denmark had a 98% dependence on imports of energy, mostly oil from the Middle East. And when the energy crisis struck, people suddenly became aware of the very large security supply issues and wanted to diversify. We did so by starting to explore for oil and gas in the North Sea. And we also did it by changing our heating infrastructure to district heating plants and planning for that in order to increase the energy efficiency of the whole system.
