Gayslang for Cops in the 1930s

This photo by famous street photographer Arthur Wiegy-Fellig was taken in New York City in 1939. It was a time when it was literally against the law for a bar or restaurant to serve a drink to a homosexual. In the 1930s, New York's police department's Cabaret Bureau prohibited the employment of anyone who was or pretended to be a homosexual. Some of the queens in the photos look nervous, some look unhappy, but they all have a look of defiance in their faces.
