The Centurion's Exhalation

Jesus cried out and gave up the ghost. That's a long phrase. It comes out of one Greek word, ek peneo, which literally means to breathe out but like a final exhalation. Remember exhaling was harder than inhaling during crucifixion. And that's what Jesus is doing. He's flexing that diaphragm. But in reality, it's bigger than that. In Hebrew, breath and wind and spirit are all the same word. As he's exhaling, as he's forcing air out of his lungs, it's him forcing spirit out of flesh.
