The Role of Space and Architecture in Care Work

Residents are left sitting naked and soiled on commodes in the middle of cold rooms with their doors open for all to see. Care workers walk in and out of residence bedrooms as they are being changed or bathed without acknowledgement. Residents shout out for assistance but are often ignored. The care workers appear unmoved by the sights, sounds and smells which I find overwhelming. It's not to deny that toxic work practices and forms of horrific abuse occur. We know that they do through research and through media reports like you mentioned earlier. But looking at the role of things like space and architecture in how care is provided allows us to see how poor quality care isn't just a result of a workforce with
