As the 1800s turned into the 1900s Europeans in particular and white folks in general gradually started to accept that on balance colonialism had at least been a problematic idea. Europe gradually began to release their active or their captive African colonies from their chains. Since there was no profit in doing this, colonies were generally let go in the laziest way possible. Slap dash elections were held and as a general rule men were left in charge who colonialists thought would be trusted to rule in a manner beneficial to European economic interests.
