Is There a Need for a Close Loop Materials Economy?
The idea is that these are really just intermediate phases. And it looks pretty dirty and grubby now, but in fact, a good news, human ingenuity is boundless. So we can all easily say we can't keep running on linear material's economy with expodential growth on the planet. But this already doesn't look like the model that you are mentioning of society hobbling along mostly the same. That would be a significant change. Not maybe as significant as a warp drive, but it would be a fundamentally different type of civilization.
