What Does He Prepare to Do for the World?
If he deserves only 8 units of suffering and he's currently experiencing 20, why wouldn't the total suffering go down to 18? It could. It could. But even if the total were the same, it does go up. It goes up because his merit goes up and if he deserves the suffering less there's more surplus left over to be able to help the world. You have to say that before the suffering actually occurs. Otherwise after the fact you can't subtract.
