The idea of 'activation energy' is that a process or reaction would continue under its own tendencies if only it were started. We don't do processes necessary for closing the kind of loops that would make a large difference, he says. And we're coming a long way on the side of knowledge of how to actually take plastics and repolymerize them back into flexible polymers which can be reused. But doing so takes more energy relative to what you can do with those outputs than makes economic sense.
