The Military Revolution in the First World War

British soldiers have a very different relationship with the military as opposed to french and german soldiers. Military service is not connected to their citizenship, they are subjects, not citizens. Their recourse to to protest or to voice their concerns does not exist in the same way. And there is a potentially an avenue for research which is t actually a more effective mechanism for making soldiers tow the line than citizenship.
