Painting People of Color in New Haven
I walked out into the streets of New Haven with the desire to bring in the image of the people who were in that city. When making those paintings and drawing those folks into my work, it became an interesting provocation for a lot of folks. I don't think they knew how to synthesize that, how to really take it. We didn't really have a language about showing up, taking up space, representing the language of hip-hop and the way that people dress. That stuff was radically moved in. It's not that long ago. The advent of this rise in figurative paintings simply didn't exist.
