Elon Musk started his first company with just $2,500 of his own money. He went to Stanford University but decided after two days that he was no longer interested in pursuing a PhD. Alongside his brother, he set up an online business directory called Zip2 which was sold for $307 million in 1999 and Elon received around $20 million. With the controversial businessman and investor Peter Teal, Elon was part of the team to found a payments platform which later developed into PayPal. eBay purchased PayPal in 2002 and Musk pocketed around $180 million from the deal.
