Copernicus published his heliocentric system in 1543 as you say in D. Emma Perkins. This placed the sun at the centre of the universe with the planets orbiting the sun. So crucially the earth has become one of the planets. It's very influential in terms of predicting planetary positions. But the physical reality of the system is not really taken up until the later work of Kepler and Galileo around the turn of the 17th century.
