S-Com was the largest electricity company on the continent of Africa. It supplied more than 50% of the electricity generated in Africa. Planning failures, a loss of skills and inadequate maintenance meant that S-Com was fatally hobbled. People are now heavily dependent on building coal in doors for warms, for cooking, for boiling water. This takes us back to the dark days of apartheid when smoke hazes blanketed impoverished townships. How did we get here?
