The Van Luz's Swayres
The Van Luz were a prosperous southern family, and the region was being slaveholders. At about the time Elizabeth would have returned home, they had up to 15 enslaved people working in their home. The mansion that Papa bought was a three-story, 14-room mansion. It covered an entire block, and it was located just across the street from St. John's Episcopal Church.
