If we're talking short stories, I highly recommend a volume called Palm of the Hand Stories from Yasunari Kawabata. If you want a real challenge, then I would recommend Genji Monogatari, or the Tale of Genji. Agee Yoshikawa's Musashi is one of the best-selling books of all time in Japan.
