The Origins of the Modern Self by Charles Taylor
Charles taylor made an interesting point about christianity in particular. He adif you 're going to invent a religion that offered you nothing but infantile comfort, why in the world would you bother with conceptializing hell? That just seems like an unnecessary detail to add to the whole story, right? If it's all about comfort, why would you hypothesise that the consequence of a serious error was eternal torment? It doesn't really sound very it isn't likely to make you feel comfortable.
