In the name of national security, there was like this full fusion of your loyalty to nation security being really fused with your identity. And he talks about how talking about the state infiltration of communis became a way of talking about sexuality and race and just all kinds of things that are completely extraneous. But it was like you have to be the right kind of person to be secure, and if you said any of these trigger words, then suddenly you're on the outside of this. It's extremely terrifying to read those little copied paragraphs of what the mc carthy interrogations were like. I also start thinking, is this a part of increasing political polarization?
