Forgiveness and Mercy

In the ancient world there really wasn't any concept of forgiveness. In Puritan New England if a criminal was about to be hanged but then repented of his crime the community would throw him a feast they would reconcile themselves to him and then hang him so you can have forgiveness forgiveness and no mercy they can be decoupled. The cases that warrant our forgiveness versus the ones that don't can be somewhat surprising consider a pair of more or less recent episodes of publicized forgiveness and their reception.
