CHAPTER

The Extensive Mind Hypothesis

Our sense of self is a collective phenomenon that emerges in some currently unknown way from the activity of lots of different components. So our cells are certainly more complicated than bacteria. They're perhaps not as complicated as something like a pyramesium, which is a free living organism that has to fend for itself on a day-to-day basis. But they may also be more complicated because our cells live in a very rich social environment,. And they're always talking to each other and trying to get each other to do various things. In a sense, your sense of self extends well outside of your body into all of these records that have been made in the environment.
