Euripides and the Death of a Woman
Women were identified by their relationships to men, and even in law court speeches. The playwright Euripides represents two very different reactions to this cultural norm. Only one of the surviving 32 plays has no female characters. In a society that valued women's silence, their predominance in public art forms constitutes a paradox.
