Proton has become a real thing even on the normal Linux desktop. There are lots of people pushing Proton tools to use the very latest versions that Valve release. It's this way of emulating Windows on Linux which often has better performance being used by the games developers and the publishers themselves as like a platform to optimize their games. Even if you don't really care about having a 720p relatively low power gaming rig, you're still going to benefit from the Steam Deck and all the development on Proton.
