CHAPTER

Is There a Better Way to Induce Immune Response?

The immune system can't detect LPS as we just described if it's actually doing its job sitting in the outer membrane. Flagellin is an outstanding inducer of innate immunity, in particular because of its ability to bind the TOE like receptor 5. Host adapted enteric pathogens are very good at mutating their flagellin which affects the ability to probably dimerize and activate the receptor. So instead of just making a better system, a higher fidelity flagellar system, it seems that the more likely strategy is to live with the fact that we're going to make mistakes so it's not immunostimulatory.
