I think back then I was thinking there was this magic box out there that would make you sound like a dealer or a man. But now I think really it was just that the people I did used these ears a lot and chose the right sounds. It maybe didn't rely on much external stuff. Maybe it was really about just really listening to those sounds. And then if a sound doesn't work, scrap it and use a different one. That's kind of how I imagine a lot of really good hip-hop producers back then. Because, you know, especially working from an NPC as well and quite possibly mixing it within the NPC.
