In order to solve a complex problem, especially a social problem, you need to understand a lot of ideas from a lot of different fields of study. This is the same philosophy that's behind liberal arts education, or, as engel says, liberal arts and sciences. And when they say science, that translation meanss each systematic form of knowledge which doesn't quite mean modern science. Each art has its metaphysics. Now what they mean by that is, it has its theory. To critique a novel, you have to understand some literary theory. To build a house,you have to understand theories of physics and engineering.
