Representationalism in the Enlightenment Tradition

Kottemer rejects what he calls representationalism, the view that in fact we do not have direct contact with things. Gottermer would revive the tradition of rhetoric that has roots in the Greeks. He finds Enlightenment thought rejecting rhetoric. We should simply be giving scientific proofs for what we want to know and believe,. And rhetoric should be so to speak tossed out. Kottemer agrees and embraces the two great accomplishments of the Enlightenment: modern science and democracy.
