The story of Qualcomm in its early days was very much around the standards, the standards which determined how this link worked. By the late 80s, it became clear that the dominant standard in most of the world was something to come out of Europe called GSM. What Qualcomm came up with was an alternative called CDMA. And by the time we got to 3G, a lot of what Qualcomm had done for their CDMA standard got incorporated into the global GSM standard for 3G.
