The Evolution of Villain

In the 1800s, villain of the piece became a common turn of phrase used in reference to theatrical plays. Valleins didn't define themselves as low-born or uncivilized. Their landowners did. Every phase of the word villain's moral deterioration was influenced by the biased point of view of the upper class.
