The National Association of Manufacturers had originally been a very protectionist organization. They used child labor in order to reduce wages and they managed to convince the courts that workplace safety problems were actually the fault of the workers, she says. The NAM changes fundamentally in the 30s for very internalist sort of reasons. And then those large men, much wealthier manufacturers begin to believe it's in their interests to try to change the political tone of the United States.
