Krista McAuliffe was chosen out of more than 11,000 applicants for the NASA Teacher in Space project. She had actually planned on teaching two lessons while she was in space. On January 26, 1880, Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He's perhaps best remembered for returning to the Philippines in 1944 after being forced to flee in 1942.
