Smedley Butler, the most decorated marine in history, is portrayed as a character. The book takes place during World War I and focuses on how veterans try to get their bonus money back before it's stopped by Douglas MacArthur using tanks. Smedley was very much against militarism but also believes that guns are the only way out of capitalism.
